The property has 9 acres (about half wooded/half cleared), a 3B/2B house, a pond and several sheds.

The house needs a remodel, then I’ll add the following to make the mini-farm:

  • Fenced-in garden
  • Fruit orchard
  • Berry patch
  • Chicken coop/run
  • Goat enclosure/pen
  • Rainwater collection system
  • Construction trailer converted to office

7/9 UPDATE: My contractor spent two days assessing the house and we now have a close-to-final plan. He’ll be back for a few days to help with major projects like kitchen countertops and putting in a new shower.

6/22 UPDATE: I took week six off from working on the house and worked on the sheds and the raised garden beds. BIG learning curve on the beds (I’ll have to re-do the first one), but I’m getting the hang of it. I hope to have 12-18 (or more) in the fenced-in front yard.

6/7 UPDATE: I am into week four, focusing on updating and remodeling the house. There’s been a major electrical upgrade and some minor plumbing work started. The kitchen cabinets have been repainted, but need to be assembled and new hardware attached. Demo is in progress in both bathrooms, the two bonus rooms, the office and new laundry room.

I hope to begin some work on the farm in less than two weeks, while the home remodel could take another month. I’ve had a visit from two representatives of the MS office of the NRCS (ag experts) who walked the property and gave me loads of free advice for the farm buildout. I also had a visit from a MS State University landscape architecture professor who also spent an hour explaining various features of my land and pond, with suggestions.
