How to Remove Dead Skin and Moisturize the New Skin

Keeping skin clean and moisturized is key to maintaining a youthful appearance. Sun, wind, dirt, oils and other factors can dry and damage skin. A proper skin care regimen doesn’t have to be costly. Follow a regular skin care routine each day using common items you may already have around the house to keep your skin clean, moist and young looking.

Step 1

Rinse your face with warm or lukewarm water. Hot water can deplete your skin of moisturizing oils.

Step 2

Exfoliate your skin with an abrasive such as a rough wash cloth, dry oatmeal, loofa bar or dry brush. Press the abrasive against your skin and with firm but gentle pressure, scrub your skin using a circular motion. Stay in one area for several seconds before moving to the next. Rinse your face with cool or lukewarm water after a thorough exfoliation. Look at your skin to see if any areas need additional attention.

Step 3

Wash your face with warm or lukewarm water and a mild soap. Use less pressure if you have just exfoliated. Use a fat-dense soap with ingredients such as cocoa butter, lanolin or coconut oil. If you use a commercial soap, use one that’s not intended for oily skin. Instead, find a soap recommended for people with dry skin. Pat (not rub) your face dry with a towel, leaving your face damp, but not dripping.

Step 4

Apply moisturizer to damp skin. Moisturizers absorb better into damp skin. Use a commercial moisturizer made for dry skin or a natural product such as petroleum jelly, aloe or an essential oil.

Facial Skin Care Tips for Women

Make a home peel using natural acids from citrus fruits, such as lemons, limes, tomatoes, grapefruits or oranges, and mix with items such as mayonnaise, eggs, yogurt or mashed vegetables like avocados. Leave the mask on for five to 15 minutes, then remove by rinsing with lukewarm or cool water.

Shaving Tips for Men

Moisturize prior to shaving if you are a man. Put your shaving cream on top of a moisturizer. Use warm water and a sharp blade to prevent scraping your skin. Apply a moisturizer after shaving or use an after shave.
